मामाजीMamajiMaternal Uncle

Mamaji (मामाजी) is your mother's brother — the maternal uncle in Hindi families, whether elder or younger than your mother. His wife is your Mamiji, and his home is your nanihal, the maternal grandparents' house.

Who is your Mamaji?

Few relatives carry more ritual weight than a Mama. At North Indian weddings he traditionally brings the bhaat or mayra — gifts and clothes for his sister's child — and in many communities he escorts the bride into the ceremony himself. Summer holidays at the nanihal, being spoiled by Mama far from parental rules, are a stock happy memory across generations; honouring his sister's children is how a brother honours his sister.

How it's used

Nieces and nephews address him as Mamaji or Mama, using aap in most families. For instance: "मामाजी, इन गर्मियों में हम नानी के घर आएँगे" (Mamaji, in garmiyon mein hum nani ke ghar aayenge) — Mamaji, we will come to grandmother's house this summer. The word is warm enough that close family friends sometimes earn it too.

Mamaji vs similar terms

Mama sits on the maternal side, which separates him from Chacha and Tau, your father's younger and elder brothers. Unlike those two, Hindi does not split Mama by age — every brother of your mother is simply Mama, with Mami as his wife.
