ਭਰਜਾਈBharjaiSister-in-law

Bharjai (ਭਰਜਾਈ) is your brother's wife — the Punjabi equivalent of Bhabi. When a brother marries, his wife becomes Bharjai to all of his siblings, younger and elder alike.

How your Bharjai connects to you

Who is your Bharjai?

The Bharjai holds a special warmth in Punjabi family life: she arrives as a stranger and is expected to become something between an elder sister and a young mother to her husband's siblings. Folk tradition celebrates the mischievous rapport between a Bharjai and her Deor, while with the Nanad the songs admit more friction. In many households the eldest Bharjai eventually runs the joint kitchen, inheriting real authority.

How it's used

Siblings address a brother's wife as Bharjai or, very commonly, Bhabi ji; children of the house may grow up using it like a name. For example: "Bharjai ne saareyan laee cha bana diti" — "My brother's wife made tea for everyone."

Where Bharjai comes from

Bharjai is built on bhra, 'brother' — she is the brother's wife. Across much of Punjab the warmer Bhabhi is used in its place, drawn from the same North-Indian family of kinship words.

Bharjai vs similar terms

Bharjai describes the same woman a Nanad calls hers from the other direction — the bride is Bharjai to her husband's siblings and calls his sister Nanad. Do not confuse her with a Saali or Jathani: the Saali is a man's wife's sister, and the Jathani is a husband's elder brother's wife.

Did you know?

The bhabhi–devar bond (a wife and her husband's younger brother) is one of the few Punjabi relationships where open teasing and joking are traditionally welcome — and by custom it's the bhabhi who scouts a bride for her devar.
